Sounds too good to be true. I would be skeptical because of the size. The small size means it doesn't have room for a very large battery. It says you can scan and download maps. He will need access to a computer. Those are my concerns. Also the display? Some gpss have a map display, some don't..Can you return it if not satisfied. I wonder how hard it is to recharge the battery or if there is an external pack A lot of questions. almost all gps have altitude capability why is that one just 1200 ft? Not true about bumbed down gps's Clinton changed that before he left office.

Suuntos are really good watches, and also good for the gadgets they have inside them. They are definetely allowed and lots of guys use them. If I was going to spend that much on a GPS though, I'd get a handheld one with a lot more features on it than the Suunto would have. If you do buy it, make sure you save the reciepts for tax purposes.

If the GPS system you want to buy for him is a commercially available set, don't bother. The commercially available sets have been "dumbed down" so that they're not as precise -- generally only good to within ± 10 meters. Military systems are capable of ± 1 meter.

thats a fair price for a GPS, especially if its that size. (as electronic things get smaller, their price goes up ironically)

I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 which has the heart rate monitor. They make the 205 which does not have heart rate. I admit the unit is a bit clunky looking but I honestly never notice it while running. I love mine, it has helped to substantially reduced my PR in the full and 1/2 marathon.

Cheapest place I have found it for sale is which is actually a boating supply store (Garmin also makes GPS for boaters). I would recommend the unit with heart rate. That will help to to truly maximize your training.

Good luck

I say no, I have not seen anything like that. A GPS unit uses way too much power to do that.

Comment on Which GPS system is better: the NAVIGON 2100 Portable GPS or the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition? by Val

I have the TomTom one 3rd edition. So far, no problems whatsoever. It is very accurate. I did almost buy the Navigon, however, because its a new brand, I didn't want to buy it because I am always wary of brand new Brands. The only reason I even considered it was because of the price and the look of it. It is very nice looking. AND, the navigon has something that the Tomtom doesn't. It has voice to speech, which is actually a very useful tool. Basically, the Tomtom will tell you to 'turn left on bla bla Street'. But the Navigon will actually say 'Turn left on Middle St'. So it will actually speak the name as well and its nice if you are driving by yourself and don't have to look at the screen all the time. BUT I still ended up choosing the tomtom because we got a great deal on it and have used one before on a trip and the brand is more well known and more people have used it.

BTW, if you choose the Navigon, get it for under $150. If you pay any more, then you are being ripped off, because I have seen it for $120 at Staples. Same thing as the TomTom. We got ours online at Circuit City for $150. Everywhere else its over $220.

Bottom line: If you want the voice to speech and a pretty look, get the navigon.
If you want something definitely reliable and well-known, get the Tomtom.
